Teaching autistic kids how to use the skytrain and boat services. Making new homes for fish out in the open sea. Picking up garbage in public canals. Teaching art and noodle cooking to stateless children. Cleaning temple compounds and building toilets for nunneries. Although Thai society is witnessing growing inequality and social conflicts that threaten to break it apart, it also is experiencing a surge in volunteerism that comes in various innovative guises. A number of groups and networks have been set up in recent years, each tasked with a different pursuit to help the underprivileged in their own uniquely creative way.

NETWORK LIFE EDUCATION
What are the three most important things you would like to fulfil if you have no more than a decade to live? And would they be different from, say, if you are allotted even less time than that _ a year, a month, 48 hours, or perhaps a mere one hour? Is there any one particular person you would like to spend the precious remaining moments with? Doing what? Where? Any regrets, remorse, anyone you would like to make amends for one last time?

THE LITERARY GARDENER
When reading Manote Phromsing, one had better not do it in a hurry. Lest the inimitable experience of relishing his carefully crafted prose ends up a big waste. For the Isan writer, who describes himself as "the laziest writer in Thailand", each line, paragraph and page do take a long time to conceive. In an interview with the Underground Bulletin a few years ago, the 50-something schoolteacher-turned-gardener/writer remarked how it could take him three months to get the ideas crystallised and another three to put the story onto paper. In a span of one year, Manote may thus produce only two short stories. And he holds no qualms about that.

Delivering women-friendly justice
Her former husband slashed her throat with a razor-sharp blade he used for electrical wiring at work, inflicting a seven-and-a-half-centimetre-long cut mid-neck and nearly severing her windpipe in his fit of jealousy. Her face still bears scars from previous attacks _ a slightly twisted nose broken less than a year earlier when he punched her to the ground. Still, Pim said she felt guilty if he were sent to jail and asked the police to drop all charges against her then husband. She only wanted to live separately from him, to be safe from harm, but still share custody of their two children. Yet the combination of an attempted murder and a string of drug-related charges meant his acts were non-compoundable offences, and Pim had to testify as a state witness at the Thon Buri Criminal Court.

Birthday anniversary concert
This year marks the 200th birthday anniversary of two great and beloved romantic composers in music history, Frederic Chopin and Robert Schumann. Many musical events around the world have been organised to celebrate this extraordinary occasion throughout the year. The Bangkok Symphony Orchestra (BSO) also joined in this bicentennial ceremony and hosted a special concert in which the whole programme was dedicated to the music of Robert Schumann. The event was co-presented by B. Grimm & Co R.O.P and Credit Suisse Group AG, and was well received by Bangkok's classical music enthusiasts.

An evening of Rodgers and Hammerstein
The theatre darkened, the curtain rose and the overture commenced. I sat entranced as, in slow motion and perfectly in sync with the music, a large fun-fair carousel was magically assembled in front of our eyes. It was the opening of a truly memorable production of arguably Rodgers and Hammerstein's greatest musical, Carousel.

Every moment is new
The river stream that runs past us is never the same stream. The candle that is alight and burning is not the same candle. Everything that occurs before our eyes, or in our mind, is never the repetition of the same thing. They are constantly new and ever-changing, like the hands on a clock, they appear to be still, but they are in fact moving all the time.

Moments of clarity
Napat stood on the veranda gazing at the sky that seemed to be enveloping her in bleak gloom. The cloud permeated her mind leaving the horizon as remote as ever. Teardrops clung to her eyes, blurring her sense of gravity and altitude. Losing two people she loved so deeply had become to much to bear. She pondered ending her life _ a jump could stop the pain.

GIVING NEW LIFE TO AN OLD FAVOURITE
Chef Suraphol Klaithong of Bangkok came up with a winning recipe when he created the mango and sticky rice cake with coconut cream sauce. It gives a modern twist to a traditional Thai dish that dates back to the reign of King Rama III. In the past, khao niew mamuang (mango and sticky rice) was served on a footed tray with nam ya uthai, a drink decorated with a scattering of jasmine petals. This fragrant herbal drink acted as an antidote to the heat and thirst generated by the sticky rice. In this recipe, mango and sticky rice take on a Western look in their presentation, and the dish took first place in the Herbal Drink, Ice Cream and Pastry sections of the Thai Chefs to the World competition.

Fear itself: The spiritual beyond
Beliefs about ghosts and spirits are found in every culture, but few countries are as obsessed with them as Thailand. Where else can you find a spirit house built for every dwelling? Or find such a mass following for horror films and TV shows? Whether you're from the countryside or Bangkok's upper crust, chances are, if you're Thai, you believe in ghosts and are willing to spend money on religious items to ward off evil spirits. No matter how you look at it, it's clear that Thai people are deeply fascinated by the spiritual beyond - ghosts and spirits not only play an important role in the formation of our folk culture, but also have a direct influence on the economic decisions of our everyday lives.
