Yahoo switches off search
Yahoo, which began life as a searchable list of the best Internet web sites, ended all Internet searching for users in the US and Canada - and soon, for the world; Shashi Seth, senior Yahoo president for vice, said he was thrilled and excited to announce that effective Aug 24, all Internet searches at yahoo.com - text, image, video, whatever - were automagically switched to Bing, the Microsoft search engine, "with more markets to come" presumably including Thailand; the end of Yahoo searches marked "great work and partnership" between Yahoo and Microsoft, apparently, and it was a "milestone" in Yahoo history; comment Number 1 at the blog where Mr Seth made the announcement asked for a moment of silence for the end of Yahoo as a search company, because "They have ceased to exist in the universe they created".

Murky lead-up
Members of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) turned out to be the suspicious type; the Magnificent Seven disclosed they are afraid that the companies who want to bid at the auction for 3G licences might now get together and actually share information about their prospects at the end of the month; in fact from Monday, it will be collusion, it will be a criminal offence for any of the companies to even issue a press release on what its plans might be for 3G; the companies have put in papers to pre-qualify to take part in the auction on Sept 20, along with deposits of 1.28 billion baht apiece, and that money will be seized if any company tries to share its plans with any other; the NTC has asked the Ministry of Internet Censorship in Thailand (MICT) to coordinate collusion by law enforcement agencies to make sure there is no collusion by the phone companies, top agencies called in as monitors include the DSI and Amlo - Department of Special Investigation and the Anti-Money Laundering Office.

Make a website into a PDF
There are many reasons to make a web page into a PDF - to forward it, to save it, to print it, for example. But normal PDF printers usually make a terrible hash of the task.

How technology could prove crucial in the Australian election
I have been following the election process down in Australia. The big ticket IT item for one of the major parties is the National Broadband Network. The stated plan is to connect 95 percent of homes there using a fibre optic connection to provide 100MBPS connectivity and even 1GBPS to each home user. The party concerned uses Singapore, South Korea and Japan as examples of how this is possible. The media in Australia tends to be somewhat one-sided and this extends all the way down to the PC and computer magazines.

The importance of porn
The Internet owes a lot to porn, whether we care to admit it or not. Without porn driving growth and web technologies (picture formats, file-sharing, and so on), the Internet probably wouldn't be what it is today. In the early days, trading pornographic pictures occupied much of the Internet's time and effort. Even before the Internet, there were BBSs full of porn for the downloading.

Cisco report highlights security woes
Cisco has launched its 2010 mid-year security report, which has shown a sea change in how businesses use IT resources with borderless networks, while IT departments struggle to provide security while coping with users using their personal phones to access corporate IT resources and cloud computing, which processes data outside the corporate data centre.

MacBook Pro failure: Mac mini to the rescue
A couple of weeks ago I wrote about the problems I had with my 2.66GHz MacBook Pro and how I had located the source of the problems and the freezes had ended. QuickTime, we thought, and a lot of Windows users nodded sagely. Not so fast.

THEOS creates new roles for Thailand
When the THEOS satellite went fully operational last year, it changed Thailand's role from being just a ground station and data provider to that of a satellite operator and owner, allowing for a more flexible use of satellite imagery and broadening the application of satellite images for economic, social and national security purposes.

Intel and McAfee team
Intel Corp may be the world's biggest chip maker, but it paid $7.68 billion to buy McAfee, the anti-virus company; the purchase took 18 months and made a lot of lawyers rich, and the purchase price was 60 percent per McAfee share higher than the market value; presumably, Intel has figured out some way to build the McAfee software into its hardware for future security features on laptops and phones; knowing the way that McAfee has stopped all viruses and malware worldwide, that is comforting.

Bids are in for 3G auction
Bidding papers for Asia's last great 3G auction went on sale at the office of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), and five buyers bought eight lots of them; the dark horses from Samart I-Mobile and Loxley plunked down their envelopes of baht, but the Big Boys sent two agents each; there was No 1 yuppiephone firm Advanced Info Service of Shingapore and its subsidiary AWN, No 2 network Dtac of Norway and its subsidiary DTAC Internet Service, and No 3 provider True Move of Thailand and its arm SK Wireless; the big guys are still waiting to see if they can get in on 3G with a "new" firm that isn't beholden to your TOT or your CAT Telecom, and if so, the subsidiaries will be the bidders if licences actually do go under the gavel on Sept 28 - but otherwise the existing companies will bid; the auction could theoretically get hot, but probably cool heads will keep the prices down to a manageable level; setting up and starting a real 3G network will cost at least 30 billion baht on top of the licence fee of 13 to 30 billion, experts believe.

Success for the security-conscious
A bit over a week ago a free anti-virus app from DroidSecurity passed the 2.5 million download mark from Android users. This puts the utility in the top 50 most popular Android downloads. The reason this is news is because there have been no security threats in the form of malware aimed at the Android platform. Well, there was one SMS Trojan, but that affected only a few people in Russia. The application contains about 200 signatures that are mostly for spyware and phishing threats. The app also includes some spam filtering for anti-text messaging instances.

Voice recording on the go
For a couple of years now, I've attended weekend sermons like a good Buddhist should do. As a good student, I'd wanted to record lessons preached by Pra Arjarn (the teaching monk) for later listening, which means I need to find a practical way to record what is taught in the temple. And so begins my search for the most practical and economical way to perform live voice recording.

The case of the missing data privacy law
The problem with the computer crime law is not the law itself, but the fact that it was designed as a pair of laws and the thrust of criticism levelled at the law today is really a reflection of the missing data privacy law that was drafted alongside it - the yin to the cyber crime law's yang.

Experience, as well as content, is key in electronic publishing
Electronic publishing is as radical a change as when broadcasting graduated from radio to television. Adobe is now talking to operations and C-level executives rather than the artists about how it can help make businesses run better, while through embedded business intelligence as well as how the Flash and Air platforms have evolved to make for a better reader experience in a world where content and experience, not just content, is now king.
