INTERNET SITE OF THE WEEK
The Internet is rapidly becoming the universal medium for everything. IP television has been creeping up on us, and you can sign up today for ADC Datanet's Buddy Broadband service, or you could also go to a portal and previous site of the week such as wwitv.com. Also, by now you've probably heard of the fun videos you can catch at Youtube.com and you may have explored the download options for TV programming using a BitTorrent client.

Edit and resize tons of photos
Visualizer Photo Resize is not exactly your catchy name, but it is a very catchy program that comes on to the problem of fixing up entire folders of photos at one shot in a very efficient and manageable way.

Protection pitfalls
Mind-reading must be among Wanda Sloan's many talents! Having been on the point several times over the last few weeks of emailing you for some advice about how to find out if my firewall was still working properly, I was delighted to read the most recent article in which she described Shields Up.

Price war good for phone makers
Consumers still haven't complained about the price war among the big yuppiephone firms - and neither have the phone makers; Nokia Thailand set a record high sales growth and market share in one swell foop; managing director Bob McDougall raised his 2006 expectations from 8.4 million to 8.8 million phones sold, almost exclusively because of the price war.

Web spins off 100M sites
Internet monitoring company Netcraft said the number of web sites worldwide passed 100 million - 101,435,253 to be exact, up from 97.9 million in September - and remember the web is just part of the Net. Thai authorities bragged they were blocking 34,979 web sites.

Tip OF THE WEEK
A lot of people open up Windows Explorer many times a day - - each time searching on the desktop and double-clicking the icon, or opening the start menu and clicking. Do it much faster this way: Hold down the Windows key and press "E" (for Explorer, geddit?). This is one of Windows' most useful shortcuts.

Dealing with tech trash
Numerous trips through Bangkok's new international airport this month, and seeing all the spanking new technology in place, got me thinking - what did they do with all the old gear from the old airport? What do people do with old gear generally?

Get started with security
Security is one of the top concerns everywhere these days, and I don't just mean being safe from the sort of person of a particular gender who thinks around 2:45 in the morning he is qualified to grab you because you don't think he's attractive enough to grab him.

World Wide Web just keeps on growing
In August 1995 there were just over 18,000 web sites. Today, according to Netcraft's latest monthly web server survey, there are more than 100 million sites on the Internet. So the WWW has doubled in size since May 2004.

Sudoku: The digits must remain single
According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sudoku), the name Sudoku is the Japanese abbreviation of a longer phrase, "Suuji wa dokushin ni kagiru", meaning "the digits must remain single". And this actually is how this logic-based placement puzzle is meant to be played.

65,000 reasons not to buy from the iTunes shop
There is occasional negativity about the iTunes shop in Thailand and parts of Asia. We cannot buy music, movies or the newly-added TV shows. That will not change in the foreseeable future and it is not in Apple's hands: the companies that own the recordings must agree. They don't. They won't. This is why it took so long for the iTunes shop to start operations in Australia and why in Japan the BMG Japanese catalogue has only just been added. The iTunes shop, however, is not all about making purchases.

Internet site of the week
It's great that we have standards, or we would be in an even worse mess than we are today since, despite that, we still have scores of different formats for almost every type of file: images, presentations, document files, and so on. But the truth is that the war for industry domination has been waged with proprietary formats, and if you look at the 800-lb gorilla of the desktop, Microsoft's formats for Word have scarcely been compatible between their own successive versions, let alone the competition.

PC vendors offer Vista coupons
Microsoft and PC traffickers began handing out coupons - free or discounted Windows Vista if you buy now and don't delay until the new operating system finally is released. Microsoft said that it is in the process of doubling the number of yuppiephones that run Windows Mobile to 12 million this year.

Kraisorn steps down
Permanent secretary Kraisorn Pornsuthee of the information and communications technology ministry courteously stepped off the boards of your TOT and your CAT Telecom; some unkind people took advantage of free speech to suggest the companies were missing out on state contracts because other ministries, for some reason or other, feared a conflict of interest simply because Mr Kraisorn is a member of the military-approved National Legislative Assembly.

Are you ready for some Vista?
There's a rumour around that Sir William of Gates will benevolently grant us permission to obtain a Windows operating system upgrade, called Vista, sometime around Chinese New Year. In return, the munificent one expects from his humbled supplicants a mere token payment of only a tiny bit more than the usual 150 baht - about 10,827 baht more, actually.

Add to your IT skills to improve employability
Let's take a break from programming this week and look at why you are reading this particular column. The most obvious reason is that you want to build yourself a web site. Another possibility is that you may want to get into the field of Information Technology, usually just called IT, either from an existing profession or as your career path.

iTunes copy protection is cracked
As I predicted, the iTunes copy protection that stops iTunes downloads from being played on anything but an iPod has been cracked by no less than Jon Lech Johansen ("DVD Jon"), who at 15 years of age brought us DeCSS. Basically he reverse-engineered the poorly-labelled FairPlay system. The interesting aspect of this news is that Johansen's company DoubleTwist is planning to license the code to other digital music player manufacturers. Your original reaction might be that Apple, the RIAA and others will be against this but according to DoubleTwist's lawyers the amount of grief that can be brought to bear is minimal.
